Bhīṣma said: "Our famous dynasty has all the qualities and virtue. Over all the other kings, it has now become the supreme overlord on earth.
भीष्म ने कहा: "हमारे प्रसिद्ध राजवंश में सभी गुण और सद्गुण हैं। अन्य सभी राजाओं पर, यह अब पृथ्वी पर सर्वोच्च अधिपति बन गया है।"
Earlier, this dynasty was protected by many great-souled kings who knew dharma. Never has our dynasty come close to destruction.
पहले इस राजवंश की रक्षा धर्म को जानने वाले अनेक महात्मा राजाओं ने की थी। हमारा वंश कभी विनाश के निकट नहीं आया।

I have heard of the princess of the Yādava-s, a lineage that is equal to ours. There is also Subala's daughter and the daughter of the king of Madra.
मैंने यादवों की राजकुमारी के बारे में सुना है, जो हमारे वंश के बराबर है। सुबाला की बेटी और मद्र के राजा की बेटी भी है।
They are all from good lineages, beautiful and protected by their kin. Those bulls among the Kṣatriya-s are suitable for an alliance with us.
वे सभी अच्छे वंश से हैं, सुंदर हैं और अपने रिश्तेदारों द्वारा संरक्षित हैं। क्षत्रियों में से वे बैल हमारे साथ गठबंधन के लिए उपयुक्त हैं।
O Vidūra! O foremost among those who are wise! I think we should choose them for offspring and the continuation of our lineage. What do you think?"
हे विदुर! हे बुद्धिमानों में अग्रगण्य! मुझे लगता है कि हमें संतान और अपने वंश को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए उन्हें चुनना चाहिए। आप क्या सोचते हैं?"
Vidūra replied: "You are our father. You are our mother. You are our supreme preceptor. Therefore, you your self decide and do what is good for our lineage."
विदुर ने उत्तर दिया: "आप हमारे पिता हैं। आप हमारी माता हैं। आप हमारे सर्वोच्च गुरु हैं। इसलिए, आप स्वयं निर्णय लें और वही करें जो हमारे वंश के लिए अच्छा है।"
Vaiśampāyana said: He heard from the Brāhmana-s that Subala's daughter, the fortunate Gāndhārī, had obtained a boon by pleasing Hara, the god who robbed Bhaga of his eyes. She would have 100 sons.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों से सुना कि सुबाला की बेटी, भाग्यशाली गांधारी ने, भगवान हारा को प्रसन्न करके वरदान प्राप्त किया था, जिसने भागा की आँखें छीन ली थीं। उसके 100 पुत्र होंगे।

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! When he heard this, Bhīṣma, grandfather of the Kuru-s, sent a message to the king of Gāndhāra.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब उन्होंने यह सुना तो कुरुवंश के पितामह भीष्म ने गांधार के राजा को एक संदेश भेजा।

Because of the blindness, Subala hesitated. But taking into account the famous lineage and the conduct and intelligence of the Kuru-s, he agreed to give his daughter Gāndhārī, who was devoted to dharma, to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
अंधेपन के कारण सुबाला झिझकने लगा। लेकिन प्रसिद्ध वंश और कुरु-वंश के आचरण और बुद्धिमत्ता को ध्यान में रखते हुए, वह अपनी बेटी गांधारी, जो धर्म के प्रति समर्पित थी, को धृतराष्ट्र को देने के लिए सहमत हो गए।

the beautiful one who possessed many qualities picked up a piece of cloth. As devotion to her husband, she tied up her eyes with this, deciding resolutely that she would never experience more than what her husband could.

Thereupon, Śākuni, the son of the king of Gāndhāra, brought his sister to the Kaurava-s, with a lot of riches.
तत्पश्चात गांधार के राजा का पुत्र शकुनि अपनी बहन को बहुत सारे धन के साथ कौरवों के पास ले आया।

दत्त्वा स भगिनीं वीरो यथार्हं च परिच्छदम् पुनरायात्स्वनगरं भीष्मेण प्रतिपूजितः
The brave one gave his sister, accompanied by her possessions, and after being honoured by Bhīṣma, returned to his own city.
वीर ने अपनी बहन को उसकी संपत्ति सहित दे दिया और भीष्म द्वारा सम्मानित होने के बाद, अपने शहर लौट आया।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Gāndhārī of the beautiful hips satisfied all the Kuru-s with her acts, behaviour, attentiveness and conduct.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सुन्दर कूल्हों वाली गांधारी ने अपने आचरण, व्यवहार, चौकसी और आचरण से सभी कौरवों को संतुष्ट किया।
She was devoted to her husband. She did not even mention other men in her speech.
वह अपने पति के प्रति समर्पित थी। उन्होंने अपने भाषण में दूसरे पुरुषों का जिक्र तक नहीं किया.
